Question by harding: Pet rat foot injury – Should she see a vet?
I have a female pet rat who is about 2 years old. Two nights ago I noticed she was holding one of her front paws as if it hurt her – holding it in a little fist up to her chest and not putting weight on it. I moved her to a smaller cage that is only one level, and gave her a little left over baytril for the pain, which i had from when she had a tumor removed about 2 months ago. I also gave her some arnica montanta homeopathic remedy which I have read is suggested for this sort of injury. I read through the main rat care sites and it sounds like most people recommend letting such an injury heal itself. But it’s been nearly two days now and there does not seem to be any improvement (although it is also not getting worse). The foot is a little swollen, but not terribly, and the color is good. If I touch the foot she does not squeak or indicate that it is hurting her too badly. She is also eating and drinking well and otherwise seems fine. I can’t put heat on it because she does not like to be held much.

Everything I’ve read suggests this sort of injury should start to improve within a day or two but it does not seem to be. I am somewhat in a bind because her main vet is out of town for the next week or so and the only other place nearby that i can take her to charges a ton of money just to get in the door. And is only open tomorrow (Friday) or not again until Monday. Am I just being paranoid here, or should I get this checked out?

I am willing to pay the cost of the visit, but would rather not if it’s something that will resolve itself, as getting the tumor removed (and an emergency restitching when she chewed the first stitches out) already blew the budget out way out the window…
