As I grew in my job, the necessity to fly comfortably not only grew worse, but so did the need to read, prepare and work on the plane as well. I was desperate to find a cure, so I tried everything I could think of.

A co-worker first explained to me the benefits of acupuncture. She told me how her mother had acupuncture done to relieve her back pain and said that it was something of a miracle cure. She said that after her mother went to just a couple treatments, she felt a lot better.

This co-worker talked about acupuncture every single day and was convinced that it was the cure I was searching for. The more she talked about it, the less interested I was in trying it. This co-worker described the process as a ritual and she constantly used words like miracle, wonder, and life-altering experience. She made it seem even more hokey than I had originally thought.

The medicinal value of acupuncture was overshadowed by the impression I got from her that acupuncture was performed in an environment that more resembled a palm reader’s shop than a doctor’s office. I was a man of science and ritual treatments were not anything I would even consider.

WHAT IS DIABETES?

Diabetes occurs either when the pancreas stops producing insulin, or the body is unable to use the insulin it produces. Both result in glucose – the body’s fuel – not being absorbed by the cells.

Type-1 diabetes is when the pancreas is not producing insulin or is producing insufficient insulin, whence the body is unable to process glucose (sugar). This causes a high level of glucose in the blood and low absorption of the vital energy-producing glucose by the tissues. Blood sugar levels can swing wildly between Hyperglycaemia (very high blood sugar levels) and Hypoglycaemia (very low blood sugar levels).

Type-2 diabetes is where the body produces its own insulin, but the cells are unable to respond to it properly. This form of diabetes is associated with obesity – and in some cases pregnancy. It affects people aged 40 and over, but with growing obesity levels due to the high sugar content of soda pop, colas, and convenience meals and snacks, it is increasingly affecting children.

Diabetes can cause narrowing of the small blood vessels, thereby impairing circulation. Poor circulation can lead to eye, foot and kidney problems. The risk of heart disease is up to seven times higher for people with diabetes.

But don’t rely on drugs to cure you of diabetes or heart disease, as a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that the diabetes drug Avandia increases the risk of heart attack by 42%. Yet it continues to remain in use!

Fortunately, certain foods, herbs and lifestyle factors can help control blood sugar levels and/or prevent diabetes entirely. It is possible for those with Type 2 diabetes to avoid drugs, and regulate the condition with a healthier diet and exercise programme.
