Question by Sicilian Godmother: Is there a doctor in the house? My cousin is suffering from a terrible earache.?
My cousin’s doctor is away on vacation. Her earache happened as a by product of a cold which developed into bronchitis. She told me that she went to the emergency room and that they gave her some antibiotic eardrops but the pain is ten times worse since she started the drops. She has an appointment with her regular doctor next Wednesday. Is there anything she can do in the meantime to help alleviate her earache? Any medical advice would be greatly appreciated. I am also open to suggestions of valid alternative medicine including homeopathy and herbs although my cousin is more comfortable with allopathic medicine.
Before I pick the best answer, I want to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to give some very good advice. I found the most interesting cure the tobacco juice cure. I live too far away from my cousin to do that and I know that is something she would think is off the wall but I still found it a very interesting folk remedy and am curious as to how you found out about it.

get the chewin tobacco out and put the tobacco in your mouth and after a while spit the tobacco in her ear. no joke. it works.

Question by Pepperment: Would it be okay for me to use Similasan Homeopathic Earache Relief on my dog?
Obviously I have never shared medication with my dog before however, I am in a bit of a bind. My dog has an ear infection and she gets them quite often. I have been using Children’s Benedryl for her and this was suggested by the Vet when she has allergy issues so, I assumed it wouldn’t hurt to give her some for the ear infection. Then, I thought about something. For my own ears I have been using a non prescription medication called Similasan Healthy Relief Homeopathic ear drops. The active ingredient in it is Glycerin 10ml/0.33 fl oz. It also contains Chamomilla 10x Mercuris Solubilis 15x and Sulphur 12x. Would this be okay to use on my dog until I can get her to a vet? If not does anyone have any idea what I can use until I am able to make an appointment with the Vet? My dog is a Cockapoo and I would guess she weighs in around 25lbs (give or take a few lbs.) Yes, we do know she has allergy issues and no, I have not already used anything on her. As for the Benedryl the Vet did tell me to use that for MY dog…who else’s dog would my Vet give me suggestions about? Anyway, I was just hoping I could do something for her before she can see the vet. I guess not but, I will keep up with the Benedryl- 1 pre measured tsp a day until I get to the vet.

Don’t use any human products on your dog unless directed to do so by your vet. If it’s an infection, antibiotics are needed to clear it up. nothing else will cure it except antibiotics. i would suggest calling your vet and asking him/her for a possible temporary solution. or take her into an emergency clinic and get help there.
