Question by rooney: Suggestions on how to budget our household income?
My husband makes $ 7,000-9,000 a month (take home)
Our mortgage is $ 3500
How much do you think is reasonable to be spending on:
Food
Entertainment
Clothing
Household supplies
Savings
Of course we have other expenses like insurance and utilities and car payments but I wanted to know about the other things that are more under our control because I think it is getting out of hand. We are spending over $ 750 on food and $ 700 on misc.
we have an infant and a toddler btw.
I’ve heard of a technique where people put all the moeny they are planning on spending for each expense such as groceries and entertainment in envelopes and only using those so that they can prevent overspending. Does this work?

My first concern is that you may have too much wrapped up in your mortgage. A good rule of thumb is that your housing payment should be no more than 25% of your take home pay. With the figure you’ve given it’s closer to 40%. That instantly makes things tight, but your question is about budgeting..
My husband and I sat down together and made a list of EVERYTHING we spend money on.. household expenses, debts, savings, etc. We put a figure to each item on the budget. Once that was done we also wrote down all of our income. The goal is for the income to equal the expenses each month.
If you are over your income, then you need to start looking at things that can be cut from the budget. We got really radical recently and we as far as cutting our cable down to basic service (we were going to cancel it completely, but it was cheaper to keep it for the internet). Our goal though is to get out of debt.
You also really need to identify what is Misc.
I would like to recommend that you check out Dave Ramsey’s book “The Total Money Makeover”. It’s an easy read that can change your life and how you and your husband look at money.

CHAPTER ONE – THE CLEANING GUIDE FOR PEOPLE WHO HATE CLEANING WILL SAVE YOU HOURS OF HOUSEWORK TIME PLUS 100s of $$$$$$$££££££ A YEAR!!!
Here’s the feedback we got from one of the book’s very first readers who’s doing just that:
“…..I admit to being the worst house-cleaner of anybody who has
ever lived. I hate housework. But not any more! Thanks to a new e-book
called Done and Dusted, by Stephanie Zia, The Guardian newspaper’s
queen of clean, I have been introduced to, and fallen in
lov…e with, microfibre cloths, which she describes as “the most
life-changing, chore-reducing product to appear in the home since the
dishwasher.” I don’t know how many products I’ve bought over the years
that have promised miracles, but certainly lots. And none of them have truly
delivered. Until now. for that one tip alone – and there are many, more
more excellent ideas in the book, Done and Dusted is more than worth
the money, and it has, as Gregg Wallace would yell: CHANGED —-MY—-LIFE!
I don’t know Stephanie Zia. I’ve never met her. I have followed her
blog over the last couple of years, which is how I learned about her
book. She didn’t ask me to write this. But by golly, she’s my heroine. BRILLIANT book. It should be required reading for every housewife/househusband.”
