Question by MAR: What supplies should we have on hand for when the baby comes home?
Hi there,
I’m attempting to formulate a shopping list of household supplies to have in plenty stock for when we bring home our baby. I’m currently 35 weeks along and want to take care of some of these details while I still can.
What are some things that got you through those first weeks with a newborn?
Some things I’ve taken into account are toilet paper, paper towels, pads…what else? And how much of these things would be enough?
Thanks!

I just had a baby last week and I wish I would have checked to make sure I had plenty of detergent and softener for the laundry! Luckily I had a girlfriend that could run to the store for me but that was definitely a drag when I needed to get some of my laundry done to feel a little more human, lol. I would also check your toiletry bag and make sure you’re not running low on any makeup, sounds silly but I did my makeup for the first time yesterday and it just brightened me up and made me smile. It would have been a drag to not have something I needed. Hope that helps.

Trouble Getting Baby to Sleep? Here’s What not to Do
It always troubles me to hear that there are parents using sleep medications for getting baby to sleep. Not just for baby’s welfare but for the parents as well. Sleeping pills can be deadly for infants and small children for the following reasons:
Your child could be in for a lifetime of sleeping pill addiction. As he grows up he may not be able to develop a proper sleep routine.
There is no sleeping pill that has ever been tested on babies or young children. Some over-the-counter medications, for example Sominex or Nytol, can have the opposite effect and they can actually act as a stimulant. Getting baby to sleep with these medications is virtually impossible.
It’s easy to criticize these parents, but we should also sympathize with them as they’re probably at the end of their rope. Parents everywhere are searching the some new undiscovered technique that just may work. Millions of dollars are spent each year with just the one aim – getting baby to sleep.
]]>
The main problems are:
- Baby naps all day and is wide awake at night.
- Baby goes to sleep quite easily, but wakes up frequently.
- Baby screams when put to bed each night and becomes very distraught.
Stay at home mums can cope – just! – because they can grab some sleep during the day. For those who work full time outside the home however, it can be very difficult.
If you’re one of these parents, this was written just for you. There are ways out of this trap, so don’t despair, you may find it less traumatic than you expected.
Try these techniques, they really do work…
Crying it out – This one’s not for the faint hearted! It involves leaving your baby to cry for a set amount of time before going in to see to him. Then gradually increase the time between visits. Tough love indeed, but it does work! Sooner or later baby will realize that crying isn’t working so he may as well just go to sleep.
Now this is probably not for everyone. However balance this with the fact that, in the long term, you’re setting baby up with good sleep habits.
A sleep routine – Keep it as simple as possible. A bath, a bedtime story and a cuddle make a good simple routine. It’s best not to include any games or stimulating activities in the sleep routine and be sure to do it every night in the same order.
Natural remedies – This one is a boon for busy parents. Herbal and homeopathic remedies are a far better and safer option to drugs for getting baby to sleep.

Baby Skincare
Baby skincare isn’t as simple as many think. It isn’t very complex, either. You can make sound decisions about your little one’s bathing and moisturizing routine if you make some considerations about your own skin care preferences. Your baby skincare regimen should be quite similar to your own.
If you have delicate skin and you require gentle products for yourself, chances are that you will want to steer away from baby skincare products that have a lot of perfumes. This can be a real letdown for those who really love the fragrances available in many items on the market today but you will be doing your little one a favor if you forgo the scents if sensitive skin is an issue in your family.
Some may not have sensitive skin care issues themselves but they still want to make sure that their baby skincare products are gentle. There are plenty of items on the market that are extra gentle. These items include gentle cleansers, shampoos and lightweight, scent-free moisturizers.
]]>
Don’t forget that baby wipes are among the many baby skincare items in your collection. Make sure that you find products that are fragrance-free or ones that include helpful vitamins and ingredients that are good for the flesh. Some wipes include ingredients like aloe and vitamin E that do wonders.
Baby skincare also includes diaper rash ointments. Skip anything that has perfumes. I like Baby Aide but this product is especially difficult to find. Other products on the market include diaper rash ointments that have a zinc base. These work especially well. The zinc is a natural element that makes a protective coating that heals and prevents rashes.
Powders are a little more complex. Some moms like the traditional talc products but I would steer away from this kind of product for any little one, sensitive skin or not. Others like to use homeopathic products like cornstarch for their baby skincare powder. Then there are those that use no powders whatsoever.
Natural options are ideal for some moms. I love using olive oil as a natural baby skincare product. The oil is naturally gentle and it is readily absorbed by the skin. Also, it works wonders on cradle cap. This is a personal favorite that has worked well for me in the past.
The only baby skincare product that really can’t be ignored is sunscreen. This is one of the most important things you can apply to your little one’s skin after he or she turns six month old.

Infant Gas Drops and Other Ways to Treat a Colic Situation in a Gassy Baby
There are many options available for treatment if the colic has been aggravated due to gas, bloating, and digestive discomfort. There are three categories of treatments for infant gas like infant gas drops, gripe water, and probiotics. These treatments work in different ways and the differences between these types can help you to decide which one you should choose for your baby colic.
The point below can help you from where to choose to begin:
Infant Gas Drops also known as Simethicone – Simethicone breaks down the surface tension of the air bubbles that form the gas in the baby’s stomach and discharges it in the form of belching or, pushing it out through the intestinal tract. This reduces the gassiness to a great extent. Just ensure that you discuss the use of this with your baby’s doctor because it is not a recommended solution for the long term.
]]>
Gripe Water – Gripe water is a homeopathic remedy and uses herbal ingredients. It can help in reducing gassiness in a Gassy baby and can help in better digestion. Though these ingredients are not harmful still you can seek an advice from your baby’s doctor before giving the gripe water.
Probiotics – Babies do not have the bacteria that are found in adults and that help in digestion. Since babies are only used to digesting their mother’s milk, they have less adaptability to digesting everything else. This means added digestive problems for babies and hence cramps and gassiness is not uncommon in premature babies and other infants. Appropriate use of probiotics can help reduce these problems and get rid of the gassiness in a gassy baby.
There could be multiple options to resolve the problems in a gassy baby. One or, a combination of a few of these solutions could be the best for your baby but the decision is for you to make depending upon your babies health and such other aspects. It is always recommended that you discuss all of these option with your pediatrician before using any of them.

Helping Baby Sleep – Proven Techniques
All parents know this scenario: her adorable smile, his glorious giggles and cooing – you just can’t bear to put down your loving baby who won’t go to sleep. Your heart might feel like breaking every time a cry rings out from the crib. You wonder is she ok, is he ever going to sleep? The issue of “baby sleep help” is a long and varied one that has had parents baffled and sleep-deprived for centuries.
Pediatric specialists to whom I have spoken generally recommend establishing a routine, or set of guidelines if there are no physical problems present. Helping baby sleep can be quite frustrating and have you acting like an infant yourself at times. But it doesn’t have to be that way. As early as you can, help your baby establish a healthy attitude toward sleep. Your end result is to let your child know that sleep is a secure and pleasant state so that they’ll have no trouble relaxing into it. Keep this up as your children grow so that they never develop a negative attitude towards sleep.

Next, crucially evaluate any new gadgets on the market offering miraculous ways to help your child sleep. There are many of these items in the stores from oscillating cribs to stuffed animals that “breathe”. The bottom line is that you know your baby, and you should decide if such a device or program would be sensible to your child’s temperament, personality and well-being. Also be aware if you use the “cry-it-out” method. Your baby could be trying to tell you that something is wrong, so you need to pay attention if he cries.
The little things mean a lot too when you put your baby to sleep. It helps to create a cozy environment for your baby that is warm and comfortable. Placing a warm baby onto cold sheets can cause them to get irritated and cry. In the winter, when it’s cold, use soft flannel sheets for his crib.
Nowadays baby sleep help can take many forms. Several colleagues and neighbors of mine are enlisting natural ways to make bedtime a more relaxing event without the help of drugs. And without leaving their baby to cry as the main solution. Natural sleep remedies, made from safe and all natural homeopathic ingredients, are now being sold through specialized outlets. All you have to do to is crush the tablets and put them on your child’s tongue or mix them in with warm water.
After all, helping baby sleep does not have to be difficult. There are products that can increase drownsiness and relieve stress in your little one so that he can get some much needed rest. Overall, what these forumulas do is rely on a combination of three biochemical substances to balance the hormones involved in affecting sleep patterns. It’s important to check that any baby sleep help product doesn’t use artificial colors or flavors, preservatives or gluten.
