Alternative Medicine for Diabetes

Maybe your doctor recently broke the news that you have diabetes. Or you have learnt that you are at risk of getting diabetes. And so now you are worried scared of what diabetes will do to you. Worried about the drugs you have to take and their side effects. Its not just you who alone is worrying. There are about 21 million American adults and children who suffer from some form of diabetes. Though insulin and other anti diabetic drugs are available, many are now resorting to alternative medicine.

What exactly is diabetes?

Diabetes is condition in which the glucose in your blood is higher than normal either because the hormone insulin is not secreted at all or whatever insulin is secreted does not work properly. This increased blood glucose affects almost all the important organs in our body including the heart and kidney. It is said that diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death. Insulin and oral anti diabetic drugs are routinely prescribed to treat diabetes.

Alternative medicine the new trend

The faith in alternative medicine is rising very steeply and it is estimated that as much as 50% of the American people are using some form of alternative treatment. One of the surveys conducted on alternative medicine concluded that people felt there were added benefits from alternative medicine use, lower cost, and perceived fewer side effects.

The alternative medicine for treating diabetes is basically divided in to two categories:

*Those that can control the blood sugar levels

*Those that help in weight loss and thus indirectly control diabetes.

To control blood sugar levels

Vitamin and mineral supplements help the body to secrete insulin well that helps in controlling diabetes. It is said that minerals like chromium, magnesium, vanadium and zinc help control the blood sugar levels.

Many plant foods decrease the blood sugar levels by virtue of their fiber content among other mechanisms. Some of the popular plant foods that are used to control blood sugar are fenugreek seeds, peas, brewer’s yeast, buckwheat, broccoli, garlic, ginger, ginseng, hawthorn, nettle and okra.

To control weight

Type II diabetes is associated with obesity. It is said that maintaining optimum weight is the single most important factor in controlling blood sugar in Type II diabetes. People use many substances as part of alternative treatment to bring down their weight and thus indirectly control diabetes. Some of the popular substances used to control weight are extract of Hoodia gordonii, chitosan, camsogia garcinia, pyruvate, germander, Momordica charanta, Sauropus androgynus and aristolochic acid.

The other alternative therapies being used to treat diabetes are – faith healing, reflexology, macrobiosis, astrotherapy (tying pieces of coral around the arms), pearl therapy (oyster pearls boiled in milk and then drinking the liquid), meditation, ayurveda and homeopathy.

Antibiotics? Heck No! Homeopathy is the Alternative

The media and modern medicine are beginning to catch up to what homeopathy has known for centuries: antibiotics are dangerous drugs and any decision to use them ought to be well weighed.

A case in point in making such a decision ought to include the following study: “A first-of-its-kind studies of more that 10,000 Washington State women concluded that women who used the most antibiotics had DOUBLE (my emphasis) the chances of being struck by breast cancer and that the association was consistent for all forms of antibiotics. The study also concluded that the risk went up with the number of prescriptions, a powerful indication that the link was real”. This quote from the Buffalo News on 2/17/04 is not the only warning from the conventional medical world.

In Country Living Magazine 1/04, there was a full right sided page (the most costly page on which to advertise) paid for by the CDC and FDA that read: “Snort. Sniffle. Sneeze. No Antibiotics Please. Treat The Colds and Flu With Care.” The body of the ad said, in essence, doesn’t ask for antibiotics anymore.

So what do we do to replace antibiotics? Why, homeopathy of course! Homeopathy is a most efficacious method of not just addressing bacteria and virus related pathology, but leaving the sufferer in a better state than the one previous to the illness.

Samuel Hahnemann, MD, the Father of homeopathy, understood and laid out a legacy of profound medicine in the late 1700’s. He understood that when we cover up symptoms, deeper more serious pathology results. So, in “treating” or killing germs, we harm the host. If we, however, support the body’s natural ability to heal, health will prevail.

So what is homeopathy? It is an intelligent method of medicine that uses minute amounts of pharmaceutically prepared substances from plant, animals and minerals to stimulate the body’s ability to bring it to its best economy.

Homeopathy is based on the strict adherence to the “Law of Similars” offered by Dr. Hahnemann. He noted in his scholarly efforts that when a toxic substance is diluted to an infinitesimal level, the toxic characteristics are antidoted leaving only the curative qualities. For example, Cinchona (quinine) which was used to treat malarial fevers in Europe in Hahnemann’s time produced a toxic effect in healthy people including the same feverish attacks similar to those for which it was used as a therapeutic agent. Twenty five hundred years previously, Hippocrates also noted the parallel action existing between the toxic power of a substance and its therapeutic ability. With the inspiration from Hippocrates and years of research, Hahnemann came to the hypothesis that medicinal substances are capable of eliminating symptoms similar to those which they could produce. This is not to say that the symptoms are covered up, but rather removed as a result of the body’s ability to adjust to the stimulus and therefore regain health.

This profound method of treating bacteria, viral, parasitic, or any infection via this method isn’t new. A study of “mortality rates among homeopathic and conventional medical patients throughout the US and Europe showed that two to eight times as many homeopathic patients with life-threatening infectious diseases survived, as compared with those receiving conventional medical care of the day.” says Stephen Cummings, MD and Dana Ullman, MPH.

Homeopathy has had a superior record for its ability to address deadly diseases throughout the world such as cholera, typhoid, scarlet fever, influenza, yellow fever and other infectious diseases. In France, Italy, Germany, South America and India, homeopathy is used by over a third of the population. In England, this number increases to one half. In India, where the pharmaceutical industry hasn’t penetrated as deeply as in the US, homeopathy thrives.

I encourage everyone to study homeopathy from a simple homeopathy how-to book, a good CD, a seminar or classes. As a beginner, don’t expect to treat cholera or other serious diseases, but many a mother has quickly tended to her children’s ear infections, conjunctivitis, sore throats and coughs with their beloved homeopathic remedy kit and a good guide book. If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, contact a certified homeopath. Many work over the phone. With a desire and commitment towards your family’s health, antibiotic use can become a thing of the past in our American society as well as our own homes.

Pick an ailment–any ailment–and chances are, Bill Gottlieb can succinctly crystallize the problem, propose its root cause, and describe a handful of nonmedical remedies for treatment. Creator and supervising editor of the bestselling Doctors Book of Home Remedies, this 25-year veteran of the health field draws from more than 300 alternative care practitioners (including holistic nutritionists, licensed acupuncturists, massage therapists, and the occasional swami) to present a thick textbook worthy of gracing the reference shelf of any family or health provider. Serious physical ailments like asthma, HIV and AIDS, stroke, and cancer receive equal attention with pesky afflictions like oily hair, acne, nightmares, and wrinkles. Mental health ailments, such as guilt, anxiety, grief, and shyness, also get their due. Gottlieb’s stance is not that individuals should shun their primary care physicians to rely solely on herbs, better nutrition, and other alternative paths. Rather, he seeks to educate readers on the biological effects of such practices and tinctures, to share their documented benefits in helpful detail. Each ailment receives a sidebar titled “Guide to Professional Care,” in which Gottlieb outlines symptoms that warrant immediate medical attention. Other sidebars highlight especially helpful treatment–from aromatherapy to meditation–for various troubles. Gottlieb provides an section on alternative healing where he elaborates on the process, benefits, and safety of each general treatment referred to in the book (from acupuncture to yoga therapy). Complete information, an engaging writing style, and visually appealing graphics make this encyclopedia-style book very easy to digest. –Liane Thomas

Homeopathy – The Alternative Medicine That Has Turned Out to be The Latest Money Spinner in India

It started with Dr Batra’s Positive Health Clinic about a decade ago and the founder Dr Mukesh Batra is the man who has transformed the image of Homeopathy at least in India. Once it was seen as poor man’s medicine but after the transformation, Homeopathy as offered by Dr Batra and the like is an expensive treatment that claims to cure holistically by natural substance a myriad of illnesses including incurable diseases like hair loss and rheumatoid arthritis. Now a few others have joined the band wagon and the notables are Bakson’s Homeopathy and Dr Health who all enjoy an enviable advantage of being able to openly advertise in main stream media for cure of diseases which is not allowed for the conventional medicine system.

This discriminatory and highly questionable policy of our government and regulators has definitely helped the five star homeopathy clinics to gain market share and turn out to be big businesses for their promoters. We all know despite tremendous advancement in medicine many of the common diseases and conditions are yet not curable and only can be treated to some extent but when someone claims to cure them through some holistic system and natural substance the appeal is huge and that’s why people flock to these clinics hoping against hope that some cure might be there in the knowledge of these self proclaimed prodigal doctors which can change the lives of the affected people.

It is not surprising that these super specialty homeopathy clinics always target the diseases and conditions that are very common in incidence like hair loss yet having very limited treatment success in scientific medicine system. You can clearly see the hype if you closely look at their advertisements. You will see the scramble between these competing homeopathy clinics to claim who has the India’s first trichologist (another bad science) as if only the person who studies a science first can have all the knowledge.

The author has some first hand knowledge about the treatment procedure of Dr Batra’s clinic which raises eyebrows about the genuineness and ethical dimension of the business. If you happen to see a doctor in these clinics you will not be given a prescription and you have to buy the medicines only from them. It sounds very strange but it is true that whether you go for hay fever, eczema, headache or hair loss all the treatment will cost at least few thousands and the same treatment period which is generally one year.

But you need not develop a bias from one incident or an individual experience; there are hundreds of reviews written in product review sites and blogs, which you may read, and find out that many of the actual recipients of treatment in these clinics, have openly questioned the claim and efficacy of this form of medicine. Also there are news in press about raids in Dr Batra’s clinics and recovery of spurious drugs and medicines. So all these put together do not paint a good picture of these marketing oriented homeopathy clinics.

Let us also not forget the fact that the very foundation of homeopathy is yet to be backed by any credible scientific evidence. In most countries including India it is not covered under any insurance scheme and there is strong suspicion in public about the claim of homeopathic water and its healing property.

Despite all this it is highly unfortunate that the Indian consumers are made to fall prey to some unfounded alternative medicine system just because these companies have money and are allowed to advertise in way that is completely illegal otherwise. The holistic way of treatment is highly questionable and so also its natural cure claim but one thing is very clear that super specialty Homeopathy is selling fast in this country of ever increasing affluent middle class who do not have problem to pay a big sum of money if someone can make them feel better and give hope.

I have not seen any study conducted in a scientific way by these clinics which support their tall claims but they are minting money in the name of cure. Also I don’t see any reason why the doctors of these clinics can’t issue a prescription if they consider it be a branch of medicine and not a para science. Many of these questions continue to be unanswered and there is an uncomfortable silence but it does not matter as the repackaged Homeopathy has turned out to be a big money spinner lately.

ADHD and Homeopathy – The Real Scoop on Alternative Medicine

If you are wondering if ADHD and homeopathy are an effective mix, then the answer is absolutely. Hundreds of thousands of parents around the world are giving their children natural remedies with great results. In this article, you’ll find out more about how using a natural solution can benefit your child and how to pick the best possible supplement.

Although many people think that using natural medicine to treat disorders is fairly new, that is simply not the case. Homeopathic remedies have been used since the beginning of time to treat all kinds of illnesses and disorders like depression with great success. In fact, in the scheme of human history, prescription drugs are really the new kids on the block.

If your child is currently taking prescription medications, you may want to consider homeopathy and ADHD. Drugs have side effects and can cause all kinds of issues, especially for a developing child. For instance, ADHD drugs are known to cause stomach problems and sleeplessness which can affect your child’s ability to pay attention, learn and grow properly. Of course, they also have much more serious side effects like heart trouble, psychosis and in a recent study, stimulant drugs like Ritalin were linked to sudden death in children. Since the purpose of this article is not to scare, but inform you, it’s important to note that while these drugs do suppress the symptoms of ADHD in some kids, in other kids, prescription medicines make their symptoms much worse. For these kids homeopathy and ADHD makes perfect sense. The good news is that you can give your child a remedy while weaning him off drugs without worries about interactions.

Homeopathic medicine uses minute ingredients to relieve symptoms and restore proper function. Unlike drugs, these natural medicines actually give the brain the nutrients it needs to diminish symptoms like restlessness, hyperactivity and outbursts while increasing the ability to concentrate and take a task to its completion. Parents who use the ADHD and homeopathy approach to treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder have seen notable improvements in their kids. In fact, in more progressive countries like Germany, homeopathic remedies are the preferred treatment over prescription drugs.

Since a natural medicine may take a few weeks to build up in your child’s system before you start to notice improvements in behavior, it is important to do the research to ensure that you choose the best possible natural supplement for your child. Clinical studies have proven that herbal ingredients such as Tuberculinum, Verta Alb and Hyocyamus are very effective in treating ADHD and homeopathy is a treatment modality that is completely safe and has no side effects. Check to make sure that the manufacturer offers a money-back guarantee because this shows a company that believes in its product. Also important: make sure that the product has been FDA-approved.

Of course homeopathy and ADHD treatment are complimented by a healthy diet, plenty of water and regular exercise. Creating good habits for your child can lead to a lifetime of good health. Feed your child lean protein and lots of colorful vegetables. Make sure your child eats whole, rather than processed grains and eats beans and nuts. As far as exercise goes, getting your child into a team or individual sport is recommended, but if your child is not athletic, then family activities like bike riding or after dinner walks are great habits to instill.
