Bryony was used medicinally by the ancient Greeks and Romans for the treatment of epilepsy, vertigo paralysis, gout, hysteria, wounds, and coughs. Bryony root smells and tastes bitter, and is very poisonous, causing death within hours, usually from inflammation of the digestive tract. The homeopathic remedy, which was proved in 1834, is used primarily for slow-starting ailments with pain on the slightest movement.

Constitutional Type:

Bryonia types tend to be very materialistic; they see life as a struggle for financial security and often gave a great fear of poverty, even if they are financially successful. They are clean-living, critical, meticulous, reliable individuals. If their material security is threatened, they become irritable, anxious, and depressed.

This remedy is also effective for inflammation in the lining of the joints, chest, and abdomen, and is given for osteoarthritis, and rheumatism with joints that are painfully hot and swollen.

Other ailments helped by this remedy include: pneumonia and pleurisy with severe chest pain near the rib cage; constipation; and colic. Symptoms include stabbing pain, a heavy feeling in the eyelids, excessive sweating, and constricted throat.

Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding and have swollen, hard, painful breasts also benefit from this remedy. When ill, people who need Bryonia are reluctant to move or speak and feel irritable and weary.
