Question by Shelby: What type of dietary supplements is a person prescribed after lap band surgery?
I am doing a research project about Lap Band surgery and I am having trouble finding supplements. My teacher said there are a lot that you need to take, but I’m really only finding multivitamin, calcium and iron supplements.

Answer by www.personal-nutrition-guide.com
Lap Band weight loss surgery is a restrictive type of weight loss surgery and not a malabsorptive type of surgery like gastric bypass surgery is. With gastric bypass, a greater number of supplements are therefore required.
(You may make a point in your project to differentiate between the types of weight loss surgeries.)
http://www.personal-nutrition-guide.com/types-of-weight-loss-surgery.html
However, patients CAN develop nutrient deficiencies with a restrictive procedure such as the gastric banding surgery due to a lower food intake.
Iron and B vitamin deficiencies are commonly reported in gastric band patients. Poor bone health is also a risk if they don’t get adequate amounts of calcium.
Gastric lap-band patients often have trouble eating beef, pork, lamb, and sometimes poultry after surgery. These foods all contain iron, as do enriched cereals, pastas and rice which are often not tolerated after surgery. The lost iron can easily be replaced IF NECESSARY, with properly formulated bariatric supplements.
I suggest multivitamin and calcium supplements regularly, but suggest iron supplements only if a patient’s tested blood work shows they need it since iron is a “pro-oxidant,” and undesirable in excess amounts!

Question by riyad: Have any patients who became completely cured by taking Homeo Medicine Arnica after a full cut Episiotomy?
Some websites Deny Arnica’s effectiveness of post surgical treatment.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/97580…
http://dermatology.jwatch.org/cgi/conten…
Even the Homeopathy websites which promote this product, warning that, “Homeopathic remedies are very dilute, and while the homeopathic remedy may be beneficial, the raw product may be harmful.”
http://abchomeopathy.com/r.php/Arn
Now I want to know, Is this Homeopathic medicine really effective for the treatment of Episiotomy? Have any side affect of it? Have any risk to increase the problem or create new problem instead of healing the problem?
I also want to know that, is Arnica only just a pain killer or antibiotic, or it is for completely healing and cure? Is it only for use to reduce pain after a surgical operation, or can use any time in order to help the entire healing process? Our patient already passed 8 weeks after a full cut Episiotomy and now have only slight pain sometimes when any movement or physical activity. So pain reduction is not major issue now. We only need to ensure complete and permanent healing. So I cannot assure if the Arnica would be applicable or not at this moment.
As we see contradictory information about this medicine in the web, so I need to know real experience or authentic data. How many Episiotomy patients get complete recovery by taking Arnica or such type of Homeo medicine?

Homeopathic medicines work as well as sugar pills do. The problem is that they are so diluted at least hundreds and hundreds X. Now as far as arnica that wouldn’t help in any form anyways and in fact it can very well irritate your skin if used as a cream which that is the best help your going to get. I would use jojoba and vitamen e.

Any supplements should always be cleared first by the treating oncologist.
Many “natural” remedies and even some vitamin supplements etc can actually counteract the action of some types of chemotherapy.
I had many well-meaning friends who recommended all sorts of treatments and supplements while I was going through my treatment, some of them were offended when I politely refused their offer to supply the recommended supplement. This particular supplement was actually one my oncologist had already warned me to avoid.
Friends have their place providing support physically, financially or emotionally but leave the health care to the medical team.

Question by purple ribbon: Plastic surgeon prescribed homeopathic tablets for before and after surgery…is this alright?
My mum is about to undergo some plastic surgery on her eyes. She told me that her doctor recommended that she take Traumeel (homeopathic treatment) several days before and after surgery. Now I’m not a particularly big expert in medicine but my intuition tells me that when something is dissolved in water to the point that it’s hardly there, it won’t be effective.
Do you guys think I should be concerned? I mean- is this surgeon qualified to perform surgery if he believes in this sort of highly disputed forms of medicine. Even the homeopathy wikipedia page indicates that maojority of systematic trials prove homeopathic medicine is not more effective than a placebo.
What would you do if your doctor prescribed you a homeopathic treatment? Would you doubt his credibility as a qualified practitioner?

I’d be very concerned.
It certainly isn’t going to harm her (it’s just expensive water, after all), but I’d worry about his judgement in other matters.

Question by DoYourResearch: What vitamins should I take after a chemical peel in order to speed up the healing process?
Lysine is said to help promote healthy skin, and Vitamin C helps support the immune system. Will taking these two supplements after a chemical peel help speed up the healing process? And if not, which vitamins would be best? And how much of it should I take? Also, are there any vitamins I should avoid during this healing process? Thank You!

Do’s
-One may snip loose ends of the peeling skin but avoid cutting skin bound to the skin.
-Moisturizing peeling skin may help. Soothe dry the peeling skin and moisturize it with any good moisturizing cream or lotion.
-For all-over peeling, a soak in an oatmeal bath is a helpful remedy.

Question by curiousN: I used Zicam for cold symptoms, after the burning I cannot smell nor taste. Will this condition reverse?
This product is a nasal gel, I used when my sinuses were completely blocked. The package noted that it was a homeopathic product, that shortens the cold, I assumed it to be safe. Has anyone else experienced this and did you regain your sense of smell and taste and after how long did it take? I only used the product one time because it burned so badly. Someone assure me that this is not a permanent condition.

It has zinc in it which should help improve taste and smell unless maybe you have too much of it in your system. More likely the cold is dampening your sense of taste and smell, but ask a pharmacist if you are concerned about it.

Not really homeopathic, but are you breastfeeding? You can nurse through the shots and it usually helps the little guys out a lot.
