He had a saddlebag pulmonary embolism in September and will be on anticoagulant therapy the rest of his life. He says there are no pain relievers he can take per his MD. Knowing him as I do, he may not have really pursued the topic with his doc. Do any of you AVers know of any OTC and/or homeopathic remedies he can take for pain? We already use ice packs and heating pads as appropriate.
Thanks!

He should be able to pain meds without aspirin, since aspirin has the same affect as coumadin.

    Hi Annie–

First of all, please (and always) if you have medical concerns talk to your health care provider. The information provided here is in no way meant to substitute care from a doctor! :)

Coumadin is an oral anti-coagulant, and a drug that has many drug-drug interactions. It is especially important that your husband not take NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen or drugs that contain aspirin. NSAIDS and aspirin have anti-coagulant effects as well, so when they are mixed with the Coumadin it can increase the risk for bleeding. Use of acetaminophen (Tylenol) can increase the risk for bleeding as well. Also, many natural products, when used in conjunction with Coumadin, can increase the risk for bleeding as well. Coumadin is one of those drugs that patients must be very careful with. Your husband should either call/visit his doctor. That way, if the doctor says an OTC pain med is alright he/she can still continue to monitor your husband while he is taking it. Hope this helps!!

He definitely cannot take aspirin as that is a blood thinner and he probably does not need any more of that.

There may be some pain releivers he can take but he must check with his doctor or pharmacist to find a compatible pain killer.
