Hurley, the love of our life, was told he had a grade 2 heart murmur. At only 1 1/2 yrs. then, we didn’t worry so much being the fact our vet said it was very mild and innocent. Didn’t seem like a threat.
Now, he’s two and was recently seen for an ear infection, as he tends to get. Upon the checkup, our doctor listened in to his heart and his face expression was not at all promising. He then went on to tell us the murmur definitely has changed, and that it most likely sounds at about grade 5.
We were pretty much numb at the moment, and didn’t have much to ask and talk about. He just gave us a brief breakdown of the possible causes, and possible solutions. We’re in waiting to see the cardiologist in July, and let me say I’ve been a mess.
Our Pit Bull Hurley is the light in our house! He’s such a huge part of our family and part of me. I refuse to think about losing him at this point, though my husband does a good job at keeping me in reality.
As were waiting, we’ve begun to think about what ways this can take us. One thing I’ve definitely given thought to is homeopathic remedies. Natural medicine in general, since we ourselves, are no strangers to it. I would hate to think of administering Hurley drugs for the rest of his life! Whatever is needed we’ll do, but we would like alternatives for the best.
Does anyone have any experience they can share regarding the heart murmur situation?
And any input regarding holistic vets?
We’re in central California, any vets in the area you’d recommend?
Thanks for the answers so far…
No one with heart murmur survival/treatment experiences?
@TritanBear- What holistic vet do you see? In California? Website? Thanks!

i am studying to become a holistic therapist myself for humans but i am going to check out this for you. i honsetly never heard of holistci therapies for dogs. litsen i live in ireland i will give my vet a ring in the morning and ask him about his matter. i hope your little dude gets better soon
I have used homeopathic medication for many years, and it is often more effective than allopathic medication.
However, this sounds like a structural problem, and that is not really something that lends itself to a homeopathic remedy.
For that matter, even regular heart medication is not (according to my vet) useful until the dog starts showing symptoms of heart failure (my old chihuahua had a heart murmur, so we discussed it.)
Here is a list of holistic vets that may be of help to you.

I’m considered to be in “Central” California, can’t help you if I don’t know where though!
I would, too, like to know about Holistic Vets, and if they’re legit and worth seeing.
My Vet put my dog on meds for Incontinence, not telling me the side effects, and they made her BLIND. After that, I don’t want my animals on any medications, so I’m hoping for a holistic or natural solution.
I do not have exerience with Holistic Meds and Vets when it comes to Heart murmurs BUT I do use them and love them, My dogs had some health issues that the conventional vets and meds were not addressing nor were they doing it safely. Several of my friends use Holistic Vets and suggested I try it years ago and it was the BEST thing I ever did for my dogs health..The Holistic Vet I use is trained as a conventional vet and then went on for further training and she requires I keep a regular vet as well. But much of what they do is makes senses and makes a HEALTHY difference. It can not hurt your dog only help and much of the natural healing and detox helps heal the body.
first before treatment can be recommended you need to find out what is causing the heart murmur, anemia can cause a heart murmur, murmurs in dogs are caused by mitral valve disease, mitral valves weaken and blood leaks from them into the heart’s atrium instead of being pumped out as it should. ventricular septal, can cause the blood to flood too rapidly in puppies, resulting in an irregular heartbeat. Pulmonary or aortic stenosis, the narrowing of the pulmonary or aortic artery, can cause an irregular blood flow, resulting in murmurs in dogs.
Is your dog on a heartworm preventive?
L-Carnitine is a natural protein-like substance which enables cells to carry fuel, in the form of fatty acids, to the heart, And Taurine is an amino acid found naturally in the muscles of the body, and most abundantly in the heart tissue. Taurine maintains cell membranes, regulates heartbeat and protects the heart from calcium overload.
to find a holistic vet you probably just have to call around or ask, I wouldn’t be too surprised if you found a local pet store that sold organic items and vitiamns would be in the know of a vet.

i would highly suggest a holistic vet … i love what they have to offer … and they are so much better than a traditional vet … and where i live, not that much more expensive either … and they take time with the dog, get full physicals, ask questions, sit on the floor with your dog in a living room like setting, low stress … and the treatments are so much better than some stuff regular vets push …
