Question by fl0werstar: Can contraceptives cause PCOS — heeeelp
?
I was on the pill for 5 years and stopped 8 months ago. As I haven’t had periods ever since, I’ve consulted my gynecologist, had an ultrasound and been diagnosed with cysts. Although my gynecologyst told me it’s a syndrome caused by the pill, she didn’t mention PCOS and only advised me to wait as I’m quite young (24) and don’t want to get pregnant at the moment, so no drastic cure is needed. But I’ve just checked on the internet and I’m terrified. I’ve been losing weight these last 8 months (I’ve even lost my appetite a bit) and I don’t have the excessive hair growth, but otherwise this sounds like PCOS. I don’t want to take any more hormones, I’d prefer homeopathy. I’d love to get back to normal! Pls help!

NO, the pill does not cause PCOS. PCOS is not a disease of the ovaries–it’s a metabolic disease and the ovarian repercussions are just symptoms, not the cause.

Question by Wicked Chicken!: What are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism in a preschooler?
I have been searching for answers for my 2.5 yr old’s sleeping problems since he was about 4 wks old. For the first 7 months, he was waking every 45 minutes around the clock and was unsoothable with just nursing. I had to rock him, bounce him, nurse him, etc. over and over again until he fell back to sleep. We only had one doctor who considered it “abnormal” and that doc did an upper GI for reflux. They just said that he would grow out of it.
Well, now he’s 2.5 yrs old and still stirs at night every hour or so. I know this, because I’ve watched him sleep. He is difficult to put to sleep (it takes hours at night, sometimes) and will sleep restlessly all night long. If we cosleep, he bites me, kicks me, pulls my hair, yells and cries in his sleep…all night. This just doesn’t seem normal to me.
What have we tried?
Homeopathy
Allergy panels (he doesn’t eat dairy, eggs, peanuts, or soy…no other allergies)
Cry-it-out (tried this for months…it only taught him to not wake me when he woke up…I stopped this eventually, bc it didn’t work)
Reflux meds
A number of other things that I can’t remember off-hand. Trust me, though, that I have tried everything obvious.
So, my mind wandered to thyroid dysfunction. He is a very hyperactive child…not on meds, of course…and we have some behavior problems with him, as well. His nighttime restlessness struck me as a potential symptom. Are there any other things that I should look for? Anyone ELSE who has experience with a CHILD this small with hyperthyroidism?

No, the Pill is used to treat PCOS.
It’s never been shown to cause it.
You may have developed PCOS while on the pill and you didn’t notice because it was keeping you from ovulating.
And with PCOS, you usually GAIN weight, not lose it.
The usual symptoms of PCOS are weight gain or trouble losing weight, excessive facial (or even chest) hair growth, painful periods, irregular periods, blood sugar issues (like insulin resistance) and infertility.

You have only posted this to sound smart by using large words. Clearly working in a research lab gives you access to more highly qualified people to answer your concerns as opposed to quizzing the general populous.
